I’ll bet you’ve heard of Alex’s Lemonade Stands. Back in 2000, four-year-old cancer patient Alexandra Scott set up a lemonade stand out in front of her home, raising money to help her doctors find a cure to childhood cancer. Four years later, at age eight, Alex passed away but her loving lemon legacy continues. Here are the tasty facts about your opportunity to visit one of Alex’s Lemonade Stands right here in the KC area:

When you take a refreshing sip of the lemony libation, you will also be enlisting in Braden’s Army!
Braden was diagnosed with cancer in 2007 at age three. His battle continues today. Braden is a very brave and inspirational boy. I think he comes by his courage quite naturally. His parents, Deliece and Brian, and his big brother, Zach, are amazing people, too!
We first met Deliece when she was the principal at our kids’ elementary school. She has won just about every award and honor an educator can and has richly deserved every one of them and more and more and more.
Once, our second son, Taylor, had a bit of a dispute with his grade school art teacher. The assignment had been to draw a picture of space & planets. Most of the young artists came back with several orbs appearing to rotate around the sun. However, our doodling Da Vinci was not using the same code. Taylor made one big planet with a tiny moon nearby. The teacher thought Taylor had created this astronomical abstraction just to be funny and she did not appreciate his refusal to change it. He was only about seven, but his debating skills were already being honed. Taylor felt the instructions, given by the teacher, had been broad enough to include a one-planet/one-satellite depiction. He ended up in the Principal’s office.
With good humor and a great sense of fairness, Principal Deliece, mediated the dispute, leaving both the artwork and feelings intact.
A little later in the semester, the art assignment was “Make A Picture of Your Favorite Team.” There, on the wall, in the midst of Royals and Chiefs and Packers and Lakers, was a picture of three men in suits and fedoras. Taylor had, once again, followed the letter, if not the spirit, of the teacher’s directions. His favorite “team” was The Rat Pack and the three well-dressed fellows: Frank, Dean and Sammy.
Those three may have added a little something to their lemonade from time to time, but I’ll bet they’d join me in urging you to stop by your neighborhood Hy-Vee this Friday and Saturday for a truly potent potable. Have a tangy taste, fight childhood cancer and join Braden’s Army all in one swig!
